Paradigm Entertainment's second N64 offering, Aero Fighters Assault, is a mission-based air combat game codeveloped with Japan's Video System. The title, known as Sonic Wings in Japan, was constructed with the aid of an ex-F-14 fighter pilot onboard as a programmer. But even with the expertise and first-hand experience behind it, the designers seem to have left something out. While managing combat aircraft may be a breeze to a retired fighter pilot, to anyone else, handling a mechanically precise air vehicle will likely present a struggle just in keeping the ground in the right place. But that's just the beginning, as AF truly gives the saying "fight or flight" new meaning

The bottom line: AeroFighters Assault is not a two-in-one package. It's not horrible, but it's dreadfully average and lacks the balance of many N64 games. If you're into shooters, get Star Fox 64. If you like flight sims, get PilotWings 64. If you don't have enough money to rent or buy a PSX with Ace Combat 2 and can't live without an action flight sim, AeroFighters may make a decent rental -- but just don't expect too much. It's a fun little two-player flight battle, with an utterly forgettable one-player game that desparately needs a code to unlock the hidden gameplay

from Matt Casamassina
Aerofighters boasts a solid flight engine, graphics that look great in screen-shots and a decent multiplayer mode, so why have we given it such a low rating? Terrible framerates that virtually make this game unplayable and a commendable selection of below average elevator music. Flight sim fans are better off with Pilot Wings and those seeking an action-oriented game needn't look any further than Star Fox. This game could have and should have been so much better.
