HSOWAW Classes

Transfiguration: This is a class where you learn how to change things into something else. For example, turning beetles into buttons! For your first few years you will begin working with very simple basic things like pins, matches, etc. but as always you will move onto more difficult things and start transforming living things too! You will also learn Switching Spells. This class will include lots of lectures because it can be a very dangerous type of magic, so it will need lots of explanation on how to do it correctly, then after you will have practice time to actually try to transfigure objects!
Teacher: Professor Minerva McGonagall

Defense Against the Dark Arts: The type of work you do and things you study will depend on the teacher. The usual things taught in general is stuff about Dark Wizards, Dark creatures, and anything evil! You will study Dark Creatures and how to defend yourself from them (ie: Kappas, Boggarts, Grindylows, Werewolves, Red Caps, etc and how to deal with them), and about the types of Spells and Curses Dark Wizards may use in a fight and how to block them. They also show you the evil spells and curses, but only so you can recognize them and know what to do when you see it! You will learn the 3 Unforgivable Curses too.
Teacher: Professor Alastor Moody

Muggle Studies: This class focuses on how Muggles live and about their everyday life, and perhaps on how they function without magic. It includes work on how they use all their different machines and contraptions to help them do things. This is a very useful class because all Witches and Wizards should learn about them because we live among them. Knowledge on how they live will help us with keeping them from knowing about magic and how we work. If you want a career in the Ministry of Magic, this may be a useful course, as they always need people to deal with Muggles who have come across something magical, etc.
Teacher: Unknown!

Care of Magical Creatures: Learn how to care for a variety of magical creatures here. (from Hippogriffs to Blast Ended Skrewts to Unicorns!) You will learn about how the creature lives, what it eats, if it has any magical powers, etc. Then, once you know about it you will also learn how to feed it, how to handle it, if you can control/tame it, and basically it is very useful especially if you come across the creature in the wild and don't know how to deal with it. Not only Animal lovers will enjoy this class, but anyone would be fascinated by seeing all the magical creatures, animals or monsters.
Teacher: Rubeus Hagrid

harms: In this class you will concentrate on enchanting objects so that they do what you want depeding on the chosen charm and on conjuring up objects too! Charms are extremely useful types of spells, there is such a large variety of different charms, that if you know them well you can basically find a charm to help you do anything. They can help you breathe underwater (bubble-head charm), unlock doors (Alohomora charm), or defend yourself against Dementors (Patronus charm). In this course you will learn those among these other charms: Freezing, Memory, Cheering, Tickling, Shield, Hover, Drought, Engorgement and Summoning charms, just to name a few! Charms are also useful for defending yourself against any curses and hexes too, and some make good attacks too, if you choose the right one!
Teacher: Professor Flitwick

Flying Lessons: This is a class just for First Years, but it is only one class that is held at the beginning of the year. It just teaches the students the basics of flying because First Years aren't even allowed to have their own broomsticks. It teaches how all the basics, from just how to get your broom off the ground by saying "Up!" to kicking off and turning and controlling the broom. A good quick general overview of how to fly.
Teacher: Madam Hooch

Divination: Divination is a very hard subject, and it deals with telling the future, and in this class you learn to do this by using Crystal Balls, reading tea leaves, reading palms, & watching for different planet alignments. It is difficult because few people can really tell the future because Professor Trelawny says that it is very rare for people to actually possess the gift of being ablt to read the future. Some argue that Divination is just "a very imprecise branch of magic", and that most of it is made up. In this class lots of your homework will be practical homework where you use the crystal ball yourself or watch the alignment of mars to to venus, etc., and then you have to write your own predictions for the future.
Teacher: Professor Trelawny

Ancient Runes: This class is all about how to read and interpret runes. The runes are arranged in different positions and shapes, and each arrangement means something different. The positioning of the runes is very important and if you learn all the formations and can decipher them quickly, they can tell you important things and tips, depending on your situation. Classwork and Homework includes lots of practice memorizing the formations of different rune arrangements and practicing to read ancient runes.
Teacher: Unknown.

History of Magic: Here you will learn all about how and where magic came from and all about famous witches, wizards, magical creatures, and historical events that still effect us today..You will learn about Goblin Rebellions, wars and battles, the passing of important constitutions and laws, the accomplishments of important and famous witches & wizards, the history of Muggles discovering about Magic and witch burnings, etc. It is important to understand why negative things in history happened to learn how to prevent it, to understand good things so that we can learn from it and also to know how our kind (Wizards and Witches) came about.
Teacher: Professor Binns (he is the only Teacher in the school who is also a Ghost!)

Herbology: These classes will take place in Greenhouses outside, and there are about 3-4 greenhouses, and most first years will work in the first greenhouse, and the older you are, the higher number the greenhouse you will work in because they deal with more dangerous plants. This is the study of plants, fungus, and herbs and how to care for them to make them thrive, learn about what conditions they are used to and what temperature they should be in, how often do you water it, etc., how to recognize dangerous or helpful plants that contian ingredients that can either help or harm you & how to deal with dangerous ones, and also what you can use these different plants for. Some of these plants contain valuable parts and ingredients for potions or you can simply use something in it and it does something magical instantly! You will get to work with plants like Mandrakes, Bubotubors, Devil's Snare, Dittany, the Venomous Tentacula, etc. Class time will be spent learning how to care for the plants or actually getting in and extract precious ingredients from the herbs, etc. Homework will be memorizing what plants are used in what potions, which are dangerous and how to care for certain plants.
Teacher: Professor Sprout

Arithmancy: This is a very logical and practical course. It deals with numerology, complex number charts and equations. It is useful and easy for those who are good with numbers, and it is good because there are certain steps to it that all go in order and it is almost the complete opposite of Divination because that isn't as logical and more based on chance. Class time will be spent explaining how to do the number charts and equations, while homework will of course be to actually try and complete these number charts and solve the equations yourself!
Teacher: Professor Vector

Astronomy: In this class you will be studying space. You will learn about the planets, their moons, the stars, the constellations, and much Much More!, but this class is not like Divination, where you also study the stars and the planets alignmetnt because the point of this class is not to read the future. So, you are just studying space and all it's wonders! Class Time will be spent observing space because it's class takes place at the tallest tower during nighttime, so that the sky is clear and you can see what you are studying! Homework will include memorizing star charts, the planets orders and their moons, etc.
Teacher: Professor Sinistra

Potions: Here you will learn what herbs and ingredients are needed to make just the right potions. These are very important because like Charms, there are so many potions and they all have so many different uses. In Potions, you can learn (depending on what Year you are) the Draught of Living Death (powerful sleeping potions), Polyjuice Potions (transforming potions), Forgetfulness potions, Swelling Potions, Love Potions, Aging Potions, Truth Potions, and much more, but that's just a handful of useful potions. You also learn to make antidotes to cure poisons as well. Lots of class time and homework time will have to be spent memorizing and making the potions because you have to know how to cut the herbs, how long to boil the potion, when to add the ingredients and what not to mix incase it causes something harmful. As you can tell these potions can be a very powerful and dangerous thin, so you have to be extremely careful about mixing ingredients.
