Anna sat on the floor of her room with her legs drawn up close to her body, her back against the wall. She sat with her head bowed, staring at the floor, with her teddy bear clutched tightly to her chest.
She looked up at the door, holding the bear closer to her small body, a tear sliding down her pale face, her heart pounding as she heard a floorboard creek from outside her bedroom.
“Please... not now... please not again...” she thought to herself as more tears falling down her cheeks.
She felt a panic rising through her body, paralyzing her to the spot she sat in, fear and dread piercing through her heart as she tried to be as quiet as possbile; they might think she wasn’t there...
She heard a man clear his throat outside her door. “Anna?” a voice called out.
Anna held the teddy tight and closed her eyes firmly, feeling more tears spilling.
“Anna, your mother is going out. Aren’t you going to come and say goodbye to her?”
She sobbed quietly; her mother was going out... that only meant one thing.
Fear surged through her body as she heard her father’s footsteps walking from the door and downstairs to say goodbye to her mother.
Anna opened her eyes and looked around her tiny bedroom. She crawled over to her wardrobe and slide her thin body inside it, croaching in the darkness within.
Not much time passed before she heard her door creak open.
She tried to stiffle her sobs as she heard her father enter with a chuckle.
“I wonder where Anna could be. I know she wants to play. I wonder why she is hiding?” his heavy footsteps paced through her room slowly, the familiar stale smell of cigarettes and whiskey lingering in the space he had occupied.
He chuckled once again, and said with little humour, “Maybe she wants me to find her... is she under... the bed?” he stamped his foot under the bed, making Anna jump and gasp from inside the wardrobe.
She shook as she heard the smile in his voice, “Or maybe she’s behind the curtain?” he walked slowly to the window and threw the curtains back.
He turned and walked slowly to the wardrobe, standing outside it.
Anna watched through the crack at the bottom of the door as his feet came to a halt outside it. She could feel herself shaking as a mixture of fear and nausea took over her whole body.
He bend close to the door, the smell of his breath tangible from within, as whispered “Or maybe she’s in the wardrobe?”
He slowly pulled the door open, the light from outside sliding in and revealing the pale and sobbing child inside.
He towered above her and grinned a smile that had nothing to do with amusement.
“Now, how about we play a different game, Anna?” he asked quietly, and bend forwards to drag her small body from the safety of the darkness.
