Alex lay on his bed staring at the ceiling, feeling weak and unable to move. He slowly lowered his hand to his ribcage, feeling the bones of his hips and ribs jutting out of his skin.
He slowly sat up and his stomach rumbled. He glanced down at it and took in a breath. He stood and made his way to his mother’s room, stopping in the doorway and looking in.
His mother lay on the bed reading. She glanced up as he walked to the door, and looking back down at her book, she said. “What do you want?”
“Mum... I’m really hungry...” he said.
She looked back up at him. “Then get yourself some food.”
“But.... there isn’t anything there. I told you yesterday remember?”
“Well you’ll have to make do with what we have.” She replied and went back to reading.
“Mum... you said that a week ago. There’s nothing left to make do with...” he replied desperatly.
She looked up again looking irritated. “What do you expect me to do about it?” she replied nastily.
Alex looked at her helplessly and slowly walked out again, heading for his room.

He sat on the floor and pulled a blanket over himself, shivering from the cold.
He felt drowsy, but in fear of passing out from hunger, he dared not fall asleep.
He sighed and hugged his knees to his chest in the corner of his dampened empty room.
