[Battle Royale] is the timeless classic from Koushin Takami. The book was published of April of 1999 in Japan, and Viz Communications released an English translation in America in February 2003. The book is worth every penny you spend on it, and what's even better is that the book's price has dropped considerably since its release date.

[Battle Royale] is the story of a Japanese class of high schoolers being taken to a small island told that they have been chosen to take place in the latest installment of The Program, where kids are told they must kill each other to survive, all for the purpose of a government study. There is a much more sinister plot, but I won't reveal it.
[Battle Royale] is full of surprising twists, exciting action, and plenty of blood and gore. Often compared to [Lord of the Flies], [Battle Royale] will satisfy anybody who is even slightly interested in the genre.

Kenji Fukasaku was hired to direct the first Battle Royale movie, which opened in Japan on December 16, 2000 (As a side note, while the movie isn't banned in America, it just hasn't had any American producers who are too seriously interested in the movie. Some stores will carry the movie, and one right near me is called Daydreams, in Iowa City, Iowa.) Unfortunately, the legendary director died from bone cancer on January 12, 2003, while the sequel movie was being made. Kenji's son, Kenta Fukasaku, then took over directing the movie. Kenta wrote the screenplays for both [Battle Royale] movies.

[THE CHARACHTERS]
Shuya Nanahara: The main charachter of the book. Shuya has a crush on Noriko, and will protect her at all costs. If you want a spoiler, go ahead and ask me, [viking prince], and I'll tell you.

The first [Battle Royale] stays pretty close to the original book. It has the same main plot and charachters.
The SECOND [Battle Royale], on the other hand, takes the story to a whole new place. The movie stars the main charachter, Shuya Nanahara, as the leader of a radical new terrorist group known as Wild Seven. The other group of charachters include Wild Seven and the new members of The Program, who have been assigned to kill Nanahara within three days, or else the consequences will be death.
