2008-10-08 [Sunshine.]: Nice Wiki.

May I join? :)

2008-10-08 [DeeJay™]: of course! anyone is welcome to join :D
want me to sign your name?

2008-10-08 [Sunshine.]: Haha yes please.
You know I can't work these things.

Despite my immaculate spelling. lol
Thanks babe <3

2008-10-08 [DeeJay™]: you can now ^^ lol
what would you do without meee? :p

2008-10-08 [Sunshine.]: I'd be terribly lonely.
Completely lost without you.
I love you ^^.

Yes, I went there. lol

2008-10-08 [DeeJay™]: love you too, emily <3

"ewww.. get a room!" xD

2008-10-08 [Sunshine.]: Ew. With you?
I'll pass!!

xD.

So, serious conversation. Since this is an English language-related wiki, would we like to discuss the history of the English language?

2008-10-08 [DeeJay™]: :o
the cheek of it.. xD

uhm, no thanks. it sounds incredibly boring T_T
although i do like proper english, i'm not too fussed about where it came from :p
but if you would like to discuss english, you're welcome to :D
i'm sure someone would take you up on the offer :3

2008-10-08 [Eyes of the Reaper]: I would but I'm more into the roots of the language, as in the Greek and Latin sort of stuff.

2008-10-08 [ladynightengale]: I'm so joining this wiki!! I LOVE the English language. And the many different ways that you can articulate the words.

Emily, I would love do discuss the history with you. If you don't mind?

2008-10-09 [Sunshine.]: Matthew: I'll show you cheek ;). lol And the history of the English language is actually quite interesting; especially how many words we stole from other languages!

[Eyes of the Reaper]: I do agree that Greek and Latin are quite interesting, although, I know little about it.

Kristen: Sweet. Where do we start? xD And of course I don't mind, I suggested it silly.

2008-10-09 [Eyes of the Reaper]: I am the Sergeant-At-Arms of the Oklahoma Junior Classical League. I have taken Latin for four years and skipped one (I'm a Latin V/AP Latin student even though I've only had four real years of the class). I plan on minoring in Latin at Truman State Univeristy. I also plan on teaching it later on in life if my plan to become a professor of philosophy falls through. :) Oh, you may call me Allie.

2008-10-09 [Sunshine.]: Wow, that is seriously very cool. A professor of philosophy eh? I adore philosophy, again, I'd love to say I was a specialist, but I don't think one high school philosophy class can really break into anything.

2008-10-09 [Eyes of the Reaper]: Thanks! ^-^ And yeah, I'm excited. I love Socrates' Philosophy Club and I can't wait to actually take a class on it. (I used to debate and hold long, deep philosophical conversations with my PreAP English III teacher before Junior year ended.)

2008-10-09 [Sunshine.]: Haha, impressive. I've only just begun with the deep, intelligent conversations, and I love them.

2008-10-09 [Eyes of the Reaper]: *nod* It's much fun. ^-^

2008-10-09 [Goochi]: WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! ^^

2008-10-09 [ladynightengale]: No way!! I didn't know that we stole words form other languages! That's bazaar!
*sits with head in hand* tell me more please^^

2008-10-09 [Sunshine.]: Honestly, most of our words either come from latin or greek, and many came from the French too. English is one of the youngest languages in the world.

2008-10-09 [Eyes of the Reaper]: *nod* And most of the words we stole from French--they stole from Latin.

2008-10-09 [DeeJay™]: are you sure more of the english language didnt come from the vikings?

2008-10-09 [Sunshine.]: The norse language was very simple, and many of their words were hyphenated because they didn't have a term for, let's say, a nostril. So they would have called it something like a "nose-hole".

Yes babe, the roots of the English language are Anglo-Saxon roots, but most of the language we use today came from other places. :)

{*Note: I was wrong in saying that Anglo-Saxon English and Norse were the same. They are actually different. Some Norse words were introduced into the English language, but are different from our Anglo-Saxon roots. }(23:45:45)

2008-10-09 [DeeJay™]: 'nose-hole' isnt far away from 'nostril', hun x]
i assumed, since the vikings never really left england, the majority of their words were integrated into the english language. obviously, over time they've changed. but i bet more words than you think originate from the norse language :]

2008-10-09 [Sunshine.]: Trust me, I'm a little rusty, but I know my English language history ^^.

Let me go find my notes.
*runs to find English notes*

Oh, here we are:
There are three distinct stages of the English language:
1)Old English (Anglo-Saxon)
2)Middle English
3)Modern English

Old English was dominant from 450-1100CE. It was inflected, meaning it had different words for plurals or verb tenses. It was sparse in vocabulary, and was a different alphabet and pronunciation from our own. Only 20% still remains in Modern English. xD

2008-10-09 [DeeJay™]: but.. you only said 'latin, greek and french'.
if 20% of that still remains, isnt that a sizeable chunk? certainly worth mentioning, dont you think? xD

2008-10-09 [Sunshine.]: Hmm, if Old English was not already in fact part of the English language, then yes,

I would mention it whilst speaking of where most of our stolen words came from. ^^

2008-10-09 [Sunshine.]: My last comment is retracted, seeing how I got myself mixed up on facts, lol. 20% of Old English does in fact remain, but Norse is not part of that 20%. We also stole words from the Norse.

2008-10-10 [DeeJay™]: bah, im too tired to play anymore xD
but there is some norse language in the english one we use today, so i take partial credit :p

2008-10-10 [Sunshine.]: Haha, I'm not sure what you're taking credit of. :)

2008-10-10 [ladynightengale]: Wow! I've definitely learned a lot.

2008-10-10 [Sunshine.]: lol. That's just the tip of the iceberg too.

2008-10-10 [ladynightengale]: *listens enthusiastically* Tell me more^^

2008-10-10 [DeeJay™]: is it actually possible to 'listen enthusiastically'? xD

2008-10-11 [ladynightengale]: *thinks to self* not sure... How about, *listens with rapt attention*

2008-10-11 [DeeJay™]: i dont know what 'rapt' means, so i cant really comment :x
it sounded good though, so i'd accept xD

2008-10-11 [Goochi]: ^^

2008-10-11 [ladynightengale]: "rapt
A adjective
1 absorbed, engrossed, enwrapped, intent, rapt, wrapped"

2008-10-11 [DeeJay™]: haha, i thought so xD
i would have checked, but.. im too lazy :p

2008-10-11 [ladynightengale]: I know this^^

2008-10-11 [Sunshine.]: I'm surprised you didn't ask me what it meant!
You are constantly doing that :P

2008-10-11 [ladynightengale]: When he and I first started talking he asked me things too. But I think that's mainly because I use a bit of slang.

2008-10-11 [Sunshine.]: lol, I think he asks me because people seem to think I'm a human dictionary.

I do have a good vocabulary though. ^^

PS. English language history lesson will resume at a later, yet soon, but undetermined date, as I'm going to bed now.

2008-10-11 [ladynightengale]: I think that everyone is kind of a dictionary at one point or another. I sometimes as Matthew what something means, or if I'm spelling it correctly. But I think that's mostly because he used to correct me a lot when we first started talking. I learned that proof reading is an excellent thing ^^

You do have a good vocabulary. I like to think that I do as well.

That is more than understandable.

2008-10-18 [My Sky's The Limit]: There.

2008-10-18 [ladynightengale]: Its ok, he never said that he was a spelling genius.

2008-10-19 [DeeJay™]: w00t! new GASPs! x]

2008-10-20 [MadHatress]: lol

2008-10-20 [Bookwyrm]: -sobs with relief- Finally, I've found my home! T_T

EDIT: However...-prods entire top bit- Capitalization is important too! :P

2008-10-20 [My Sky's The Limit]: He's working on it XD
I used to be the shittiest typer on the face of the earth.
And.
I loved dots...XD!

2008-10-20 [DeeJay™]: i dont think so :p
if it was, wouldnt they have an 'auto-capitalisation' option on all computers/keyboards? xD
besides, someone already started on it. i wanted them to finish it off, since i'm too lazy x]

edit: *seriously needs to improve my response speed* <_<

2008-10-20 [My Sky's The Limit]: Ach ja you do XD

2008-10-20 [DeeJay™]: doesnt mean i'm a slow typer, though >_>

2008-10-20 [My Sky's The Limit]: ...XD Still with this DJ?

2008-10-20 [DeeJay™]: yes, i bloody well am >:|
lol

2008-10-20 [Sunshine.]: Finally, someone else thinks you're a slow typer! xD

2008-10-20 [My Sky's The Limit]: He's slower than molasses when it comes to typing!

2008-10-20 [ladynightengale]: I wouldn't say that he's a slow typist, I'd just say that he gets distracted easily. He once told me that he has a memory like a gold fish (which I totally disagree with, by the way) I think that its just something that happens with all guys. They get distracted due to simple minds............LOL

P.S. about the simple minds thing.....
TOTALLY KIDDING!!! Love you!!

2008-10-20 [DeeJay™]: <img:mood1-gif.gif>

2008-10-20 [ladynightengale]: You know that I'm only kidding. You are actually very quick witted^^
But you do get distracted easily.

2008-10-20 [Sunshine.]: Its because online, he has the chance to think over what he's saying. :)

You said it yourself babe.

On another note, I don't think the female gender can even begin to tease about getting distracted easily. We switch topics like we're afraid we have the memory of a goldfish and are afraid we'll forget it if we don't blurt it out right away. Don't deny it, we all know this is true.

He actually remembers more than you'd think...more than I think too. lol

2008-10-20 [DeeJay™]: i dooo. i also take some time to read what other people say, since most people just skim over it :p

and really, i just get lucky sometimes.. my memory is terrible xD

2008-10-20 [Sunshine.]: pscht. Skimming over what other people say often serves for a more comedic conversation, you know this. ^^

2008-10-20 [ladynightengale]: Hey, I take time to actually read what people are saying as well. And I never said that I don't get distracted easily. I'll be the first to admit it.

Emily, I do agree with you, females do blurt things out all the time. I've actually gotten in arguments with a few of my friends for cutting me off before I was finished saying what I was saying.

Matthew, your memory isn't terrible. How long have I been telling you so? Quit being ridiculous about it, will you? ^^

Anywho.. what happened to the English lesson?

2008-10-20 [MadHatress]: what do you mean exactly?

2008-10-21 [Sunshine.]: I was thinking the same thing...uhm. Where did I leave off?
Oh! That's right. "20% remains in modern English."

In 597 CE, St. Augustine and his monks arrived bringing 140 new words to the language. Most of them were religious. For example, altar, mass, priest, psalm, bishop, candle, angel, wine, hymn. They also introduced Latin prefixes and suffixes.

Through the 8th and 9th centuries CE is when the Vikings invaded. They brought many battle and sea words. They also introduced the Scandinavian Social order and administrative system. Therefore, law words were introduced. The Norse also introduced verbs such as "to be" and words with k & g such as, egg, sky, and cake.

Facts of Interest:
-Most people still spoke Anglo-Saxon at that time.
-Most did not read or write; this was because producing writing material was costly, and time consuming.
-Many were "ear" readers". This meant they more or less listened to oral stories being told by a traveling story-teller.

And that is all for today kids.
*applause*

Thank-you, I'm here all week. ^^

2008-10-21 [DeeJay™]: bravo, bravo! you managed to bore me in under 5 minutes xD
joking, obv. :p
why did the vikings introduce words with K/G? wernt they in the anglo-saxon language already? :o

and of course the majority couldnt read or write. only monks could, and had to write all the texts by hand x]
there were no printers back then, y'know :p

2008-10-21 [Sunshine.]: No. The letters K and G weren't part of the Anglo-Saxon language before.

The monks wrote Latin though, not the actual Anglo-Saxon language. xD

2008-10-21 [ladynightengale]: Wow!! I really wish I could put in my two cents *sighs* looks like I have to read up on it..

Quick!! Must check Google!!

2008-10-21 [ladynightengale]: Apparently St. Augustine left behind 5,000,000 words that we still use in the world today. Awesome^^
Also there were three Anglo-Saxon Germanic Tribes. The first is the Angles, from Angeln; then the Saxons who were from Lower Saxony; and last there was the Jutes from the Jutland peninsula.

I love Google^^

2008-10-21 [Goochi]: subject change por favor! this subject is going waaaaaaaaaay over my head, lol. sooooooooooooooooooooooooo

2008-10-21 [ladynightengale]: Bekah!! Do what I do and use Google!!!

Its a wonderful thing^^

2008-10-22 [Goochi]: Hmmmm I see. Well carry on then...

2008-10-22 [ladynightengale]: But Google is amazing!!! Do it!! That way you can join the conversation too!!

2008-10-22 [Goochi]: I guess but its to complicated for me lol.

2008-10-22 [ladynightengale]: Only if you let it be... and if you don't understand what we are talking about.. you could always just change the subject..

2008-10-22 [Goochi]: I tried that...

2008-10-22 [ladynightengale]: No.. you just said "subject change" you didn't actually start talking about something else.. so there was no subject change, lol^^

2008-10-22 [Goochi]: lol ^_^ I guess

2008-10-22 [ladynightengale]: *shakes head* dork... lol^^

2008-10-22 [Goochi]: yeppers!!! thats me ^_^

2008-10-22 [ladynightengale]: Lol

2008-10-25 [DeeJay™]: i hope you're all advertising your GASP!ness, btw xD

2008-10-25 [Goochi]: hmmmm and what if we are not DJ_Devil??? (^-^)
hehehehe (LAUGH EVERYONE!!!! EVERYONE NEEDS TO LAUGH!!! Its good for you!)

2008-10-25 [MadHatress]: (planned on it)
mwahaha.....

2008-10-25 [Goochi]: lol. i seeeeeeeeeeee!!!! aaaaaannnnnnnnyyyyyyyywwwwwaaaaaaayyyyyysssss......

2008-10-26 [DeeJay™]: whoa, all these extra letters.. are you having spasms in your fingers or something? O_o
you wanna get that looked at, hun x]

2008-10-26 [ladynightengale]: Matthew, I will help advertise GASP!, I already have it on my main paige. I'll put it in my mood as well.
Would you like me to help out any other way??
Bekah is not having spasms in her fngers, she just gets bored and she can't think of anything else to say. Trust me she does it all the time.
And yes!! It is good to laugh, we Bekah and I learned that today. It was a fun weekend, wasn't it Beck??

2008-10-26 [Sunshine.]: I think most people learn its good to laugh when they are babies. A child's laugh is the most genuine laugh in the world. Its so fresh and new to them, they can't help but be overjoyed enough to laugh more.

2008-10-26 [Goochi]: YA LOADS OF IT KRISTEN! WE LOVE TO LAUGH!!!! LONG AND LOUD AND CLEAR! WE LOVE TO LAUGH!!!! ITS GETTING WORSE EVERY YEAR!!!! (^-^)

2008-10-26 [DeeJay™]: GASP! :O CAPS LOCK!

2008-10-26 [Goochi]: HECK YA! lol. YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH MY CONVO IN CAPS? 8) lol. I'm just messing around....^^

2008-10-26 [DeeJay™]: uhh.. did you want me to answer that honestly? x]
lol, im only joking. i'm not seriously bothered by the caps

2008-10-27 [Goochi]: lol. woooooooow, ^^ lol can you tell I'm bored. hmmm....

2008-10-27 [ladynightengale]: OMW!!! (wait, should I not be using caps?) lol^^
Laughter is amazing^^ At the retreat that Bekah and I went to we had a laughter seminar and I got a red clown nose^^ I love it^^

2008-10-27 [Goochi]: lol!!! that was FUNNY!!!! I have to admit!

2008-10-27 [ladynightengale]: I think my favorite part was when she put it on my nose, I turned around and poked it and said "beeeeeep" lol^^

2008-10-27 [Goochi]: lol.

2008-10-27 [ladynightengale]: Wow!!

So.... anyone going to talk about anything interesting???

2008-10-28 [Sunshine.]: Yes, proper punctuation.

2008-10-28 [Goochi]: ok well any ideas?!?!

2008-10-28 [DeeJay™]: i gots a question :3
what's the difference between a colon, and a semi-colon? and where is each supposed to be used?
also, which one's which? xD
i assume a semi-colon is -> ; with a colon -> :

2008-10-28 [Goochi]: hmmmmmmmm good question...

2008-10-28 [ladynightengale]: When in doubt Google!!!

It works for me^^

2008-10-28 [Goochi]: works like a charm! (^-^)

2008-10-28 [ladynightengale]: Indeed it does^^

2008-10-28 [Sunshine.]: You're right about the colon and semi-colon in their looks. I'll bust out this awesome punctuation chart an English teacher gave me once. Just let me find it xD.

2008-10-28 [Goochi]: fun stuff!

2008-10-28 [Sunshine.]: I agree! Unfortunately, I can't find it tonight, because its late, and I need to sleep for school in the morning, so I'll get back to you.

2008-10-28 [DeeJay™]: no worries :]
it's not like i use them often. it'd just be nice to know what they're used for xD

2008-10-28 [Goochi]: true dat yo! ^^

2008-10-28 [ladynightengale]: OMW!! Bekah, how many times do I have to tell you.. You're not ghetto

2008-10-28 [Sunshine.]: Ok, let's bring this back to a more serious tone.

You will usually use the semicolon to link independent clauses not joined by a co-ordinating conjunction.
Semicolons should join only those independent clauses that are closely related in meaning.

Example: Abdominal exercises help prevent back pain; proper posture is also important.

2008-10-28 [DeeJay™]: *slowly starts to drift off as you speak, closing my eyes and beginning to drool a little..* <img:sl-gif.gif>

2008-10-28 [ladynightengale]: *gasp!* That's not nice!! You should at least pretend to listen, as you were the one who asked the question.

2008-10-29 [DeeJay™]: it went completely over my head, lol
would you be able to explain it in simpler terms, hun? ^^

2008-10-29 [Sunshine.]: Ok, so this is the semi-colon (;).
When you have two complete sentences such as,

"Abdominal exercises help prevent back pain." and "Proper posture is important." You can join these sentences with a semi-colon.

This is because they are each independent clauses; an independent clause is a sentence that can stand on its own.

A conjunction is similar to a semi-colon, but its a word instead. Its a word that joins two sentences together.

-So, because a conjunction and a semi-colon are like the same thing, do you see why you can't use them both at the same time? ^^

2008-10-29 [DeeJay™]: okay, that makes much more sense. :]
i still dont understand why you cant just use full-stops instead, though. what makes one want to combine two sentences into one?

2008-10-29 [Goochi]: I can just picture you saying that Kristen, lol.

2008-10-29 [Sunshine.]: Well, if its the same train of thought, then I suppose to keep it fluent. But I fully can't tell you why darling,

sorry. ^^

2008-10-29 [Goochi]: Blawst...

2008-10-29 [Sunshine.]: Sorry, what was that?
In English please. xD

2008-10-29 [Goochi]: its blast except blawst! lol.

2008-10-29 [Goochi]: its all gravy in the navy

2008-10-29 [DeeJay™]: O.o
speaking of gravy.. im hungry x]

2008-10-29 [Goochi]: lol. then go eat something. and fill your hunger!

2008-10-29 [Sunshine.]: Hmm, I'm having some apple slices. Want a couple Mattie? ^^

2008-10-29 [DeeJay™]: lol, you should have used a semi-colon to link those two independent clauses together.
"then go eat something; fill your hunger!" xD

2008-10-29 [Sunshine.]: Ooh, very good suggestion.
Practise makes perfect after all! xD

2008-10-29 [Goochi]: hmmm interesting thought. i guess i'm not good at this stuff....

2008-10-29 [Sunshine.]: :) Its ok, English isn't everyone's thing,
but this wiki is here to help us all get better at it.

2008-10-29 [Goochi]: I see. Well I am usually good at English in school. But I guess I was wrong, eh? lol.

2008-10-29 [DeeJay™]: yush ^^
also, i still think punctuation is a personal opinion. i dont think you were 'wrong' to use full-stops. :3

so, we kinda know about semi-colons.. when are colons supposed to be used? xD

*sorry, i really need to be quicker replying* X_x

2008-10-29 [Goochi]: lol, its all gravy in the navy!!! (^-^) duuuuuuuuuude i forgot to work out today! lol, bad me...*slaps face*

2008-10-29 [DeeJay™]: ugh, stop talking about gravy! you're making me hungrierer! Dx
lol, and dont slap yourself. you might, like.. hurt yourself O.o

2008-10-29 [Goochi]: Oooops sorry I'll quit talking about gravy...yummmmm! lol. Anyways, I'll try not to slap myself. Believe me, I've done worse.

2008-10-29 [ladynightengale]: Wow! A lot goes on when you're away from your computer for a couple of hours at a time huh?

2008-10-29 [Goochi]: Yeppers!

2008-10-29 [ladynightengale]: so you can picture me saying what?

2008-10-29 [Goochi]: lol, i dont know anymore, it disappeared!

2008-10-29 [ladynightengale]: lol

2008-10-30 [Sunshine.]: I don't think anyone is wrong to use periods. They are better than run-on sentences for sure.

And the colon is used after an independent clause when you are going to make a list. ^^

2008-10-30 [Goochi]: Interesting.

2008-10-30 [Sunshine.]: :)
